Car Classes

Classes are held via zoom, on the time and date listed in the class description. Miss the live class? No worries. Classes are recorded so you can go back and re-watch them afterward for 30 days.

Classes are held on a sliding scale, in an effort to accommodate a range of needs and budgets. Every class has its own rate; click on the class for details. Pick a price in this range that works for you. Choose a higher rate if you can, which allows me to continue offering lower rates.

Most classes are taught every 6 – 8 months but there’s no guarantee that a class you see right now will be taught again.

Due to limited space, there are no refunds for any virtual classes. If you email before the class that you will not be attending, your seat will be donated to a low-income person of color or person with a disability. All classes have playback available for 30 days, so if you miss the live class, you can still watch it.

Please note that while I do provide personalized services designed to advise you on automotive topics and products, I am not liable for any defective cars and/or parts received as well as any negative experiences during this process with third-party individuals.

I offer you a roadmap for your options and what’s available to you. Knowledge is power, but you are ultimately responsible for your choices. By purchasing access to a class, you are absolving all instructors and Mechanic Shop Femme of any liability for repairs, maintenance, or vehicle failure based on the advice provided.

Book Questions

Mechanic Shop Femme’s Guide to Car Ownership covers everything you wish your dad taught you. It explains things your mechanic tried to explain, but in a way you can actually understand, and answers questions you probably don’t even think to ask. It’s for US.

Some of what you’ll learn:

  • How to find a mechanic you can trust
  • How to save money on car insurance without lowering coverage
  • How to say no to a mechanic when they’re being pushy
  • Common myths about electric cars
  • How to buy an extended warranty that’s worth it
  • How often you actually have to change your oil
  • When it’s time to get rid of your car
  • How to inspect a car inside and out before buying it
  • What maintenance you should be doing between mechanic visits
  • Whether the dealership really is the best place for repairs
  • What those pesky dash lights mean, and what to do about them
  • Whether an electric car is a good idea for your lifestyle
  • How your brake system works
  • How to save $$ on gas and more!
  • When you’ll want to tow your car to prevent catastrophic damage
  • How to get the best bang for your buck when you sell your car

The book is designed so that you can reference one chapter at a time when it’s needed. For example, if you’re considering selling your current car and replacing it, you’ll want to read the chapters about when it’s time to let go, how to sell your car, and, of course, the two chapters on buying a car. If you’re ready to break up with your mechanic, you’ll want to read the chapter on how to find a mechanic you’ll grow to trust, etc.

Absolutely! Mechanic Shop Femme’s Guide to Car Ownership covers car ownership from buying a car to selling it, and everything in between. It’s packed full of a decade’s worth of automotive knowledge and insights, and I’m confident every car owner will learn something from it.

Nope, I’m what I like to call a mechanic interpreter. I’m an automotive educator, journalist, and influencer with over a decade of automotive experience both in and out of the repair shop under my belt. The foreword was written by master mechanic Jill Trotta, and the book has received rave reviews from automotive journalists, book reviews, and mechanics alike.

No, it won’t. Mechanic Shop Femme’s Guide to Car Ownership isn’t a DIY manual; it’s a guide to car ownership. It covers buying a car, finding a mechanic, getting insurance, some maintenance you should do yourself between visits to the mechanic, what’s in your owner’s manual and how valuable it is, electric cars, tires, brakes, and so much more. It’s designed to be used in conjunction with a great mechanic and your owner’s manual.

Book Tour Questions

No, due to limited space, books will not be for sale on location during the book tour. Please check the event page you’d like to attend for preorder information specific to that location so you can support an indie regional bookstore and receive your book ahead of the tour. Bring it with you on the day of and you’ll get it signed.

I have 16 repair shops confirmed at this time, but the total number will depend on the generosity of sponsors, repair shop availability, and my calendar. There is a possibility for a second leg, so if you have a specific woman, queer, or POC-owned repair shop in mind, please send me their info!

We will be using the proceeds from the $5 tickets to fund the Jill Trotta Scholarship, which is set to launch later this year. Jill Trotta is my mentor and a badass master mechanic who has played a significant role in bringing about positive changes in the treatment of women and queer individuals in the automotive industry. She also wrote the foreword to my book! This scholarship will provide financial assistance for tools, tuition fees, and other necessary requirements for women and queer individuals who are entering this field. Additionally, repair shops have limited space, so I cannot offer an open invitation. Therefore, the $5 ticket price will encourage people who purchase tickets to show up on the day of the event.

I’m thrilled to hear you’re interested! I haven’t confirmed a second leg of the tour as that depends on how many repair shops are interested in hosting, the generosity of sponsors, and my calendar. But definitely reach out to me here and let me know you’re interested, and I’ll keep your shop in mind.

Absolutely! If you’re within 15 miles of a shop location that I’m visiting, please contact me here, and we’ll arrange a private signing.

Please note any accessibility requirements (ASL interpreters, plus-size seating requirements, etc.) when buying your ticket—there will be a dedicated place for them. If we have any questions or if something isn’t possible due to limitations that might come up at a repair shop, we’ll be in touch.
